Scary Habits Affecting your Skin you should ghost

BOO!

When it comes to skincare, some habits are downright scary, and not in the fun, Halloween kind of way. In fact, some common routines could be doing more harm than good, leading to long-term damage! It's time to ghost these bad habits and embrace healthier routines for a radiant complexion!

Scary Habits affecting your skin:

  1. Over-exfoliating - Being too rough with your skin can increase the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Whether using a washcloth, chemical acids or rough physical scrubs that can rip the skin, over-exfoliation can lead to acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and other sensitized skin conditions. Weekly exfoliation also causes unnecessary irritation, inflammation, and skin redness. Being too rough with the sensitive skin around the eyes can leave them looking puffy. Less is definitely more when it comes to exfoliation.

  2. Smoking - Smoking asphyxiates your skin, depriving it from oxygen. Oxygen helps to kill Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, or cutibacterium acnes bacteria. Oxygen also helps with wound healing, so when you smoke, your wounds heal at a much slower rate. The skin can absorb nicotine, which creates premature aging in the skin by causing wrinkles. Smoking can damage the repair mechanisms of the skin by down-regulating collagen and elastin synthesis.

  3. Dehydration - Not drinking enough water daily can cause your skin to look flakier and more wrinkled. Water also helps to flush out impurities and toxins in your skin, keeping it healthier and more hydrated. Hydrated skin is also better able to keep germs and bacteria out..

  4. Skipping Sunscreen – Not applying sunscreen on a daily basis can prematurely age your skin. Nothing destroys collagen in the skin as fast as sun exposure does, which causes the skin to thin and show more fine lines and wrinkles from the sun damage. Sun exposure is the primary cause of premature discoloration in the skin, like sunspots (freckles), age spots, or liver spots. Daily small doses of sun exposure from the sun shining in your car windows while driving, or from walking your dog or checking the mail can add up and lead to discoloration and aging in the skin, just like single burn events can. Daily application of sunscreen also helps to prevent skin cancer.

  5. Using the wrong products – Using skincare products that are incorrect for your skin type can lead to irritated and inflamed skin. Using products in the wrong order, or not using products consistently, can also create skin irritation or cause products to be infective. Healthy, glowing skin only happens with correct product use for your individual skin type.
