Let’s Talk Filler!

WHat we’ve Lost:

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology cites that we start to lose the natural hyaluronic acid content in our skin by age twenty, and that our hyaluronic acid levels are reduced to half by the age of 50. Hyaluronic acid exists naturally in the skin to help plump, hydrate, and hold in moisture, and we lose it as we age. Hyaluronic acid holds a thousand times its weight in water, so that is how it works to plump and hydrate the skin. Without it, our skin tends to sag, wrinkle, and hollow.

Did you know that as we age we lose collagen and elastin in our skin too?  Collagen helps to create volume and plumpness in our skin, and elastin works to help strength, firm, and add that springy elasticity in our skin.  When we lose collagen and elastin, our skin starts to become less plump, more saggy and less supported, which can cause both superficial fine lines and deeper wrinkles.  But along with the collagen and elastin loss, we also experience some bone resorption as we age, which we see as supportive facial bones starting to recede to give us that more flattened look through the cheeks and a less defined jawline.  We also start to see temporal wasting, or hollowing through the temple area.

But Filler can help!

While this all sounds like bad news for those of us who are actively aging (anyone over the age of 25), the good news is that filler can help fix almost every issues that aging creates.  Filler does this by restoring volume or plumpness, by filling in lines around the mouth, by repositioning and supporting saggy skin, and by adding onto receding bone structure for a more refreshed, youthful look.

Although there are several different types of filler, our experience is the most natural looking fillers are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid fillers are amazing because they can help to restore volume loss in the cheeks, lips, chin, temples, and jawline area. You are literally restoring what your skin has naturally lost with hyaluronic acid based fillers. -Amy Townsend
